Abstract: Magnetic correlations near the magneto-structural phase transition in thebilayer iron pnictide parent compound, BaFe$ 2$As$ 2$, are measured. In closeproximity to the antiferromagnetic phase transition in BaFe$ 2$As$ 2$, acrossover to three dimensional critical behavior is anticipated and has beenpreliminarily observed. Here we report complementary measurements oftwo-dimensional magnetic fluctuations over a broad temperature range aboutT$ N$. The potential role of two-dimensional critical fluctuations in themagnetic phase behavior of BaFe$ 2$As$ 2$ and their evolution near theanticipated crossover to three dimensional critical behavior and long-rangeorder are discussed.
