Abstract

Recent empirical studies find that the direct effect of corruption ongrowth is statistically insignificant. However, there exists a discrepancybetween these results and the intuition that corruption reducesover-all productivity, because total factor productivity also dependson the quality of institutions and their efficiency. The current paperaddresses this issue and offers a new perspective on growth effectsof corruption and shows that direct and indirect growth effectsof corruption can be statistically significant. Moreover, the empiricalresults confirm the existence of both negative and positive growtheffect of corruption.
