Abstract : When it is used as a cathode material in a lithium primary battery, graphite intercalation compound with CoCl2 is electrochemically reduced during the discharge process. This reaction leads to the formation of a new Co-graphite compound which is characterized by chemical and X-ray analysis. The magnetic properties exhibit a spin-glass behaviour at low temperature, due to the islandic character of the compound. Similarities with the 2-dimensional CoCl2 compound are also found.
