Abstract : A strong reduction of the extinction of α-LiIO3, previously reported in neutron diffraction, when an electric field is applied along the c-axis, is studied in more detail in this paper to improve the understanding of this phenomenon. Neutron and γ-ray diffraction measurements, and neutron and X-ray diffraction topography experiments are performed on samples produced under various growth conditions. The results suggest that the enhancement of the distortion in some crystal regions could be due to an accumulation of charges in these regions. This mechanism is mainly driven by the ionic conductivity and the piezoelectricity of the crystal.
