Abstract : When using digital technology in the mathematics classroom, teachers should always consider whether the tool supports the students- learning process in a way - traditional tools - do not allow. In this sense, the aim of this paper is to discuss theoretically how an interactive place value chart could foster substantial understanding of the decimal place value system in the context of decimal fractions, by analysing the artefact-s potential for learning. Here, special attention is dedicated to the mathematical, structural aspects of the place value system included in the software. This theoretical discussion builds the foundation for future empirical investigation that will be outlined at the end of the paper.
