Abstract : False colors are widely used in images obtained in scanning electron probe microanalysis and in the mapping procedures. Color scales representing intensity variations are often employed, but these scales are not always appropriately constructed. Characteristics of colors and of microprobe maps are briefly discussed, and optimized scales are proposed.
