Abstract: The complex oxide Pb0.55Cd0.45V2O5 was synthesized and investigatedby means of X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, magneticsusceptibility measurements and band structure calculations. Its structure issimilar to that of MV2O5 compounds M = Na, Ca giving rise to a spinsystem of coupled S=1-2 two-leg ladders. Magnetic susceptibility measurementsreveal a spin gap-like behavior with \Delta ~ 270 K and a spin singlet groundstate. Band structure calculations suggest Pb0.55Cd0.45V2O5 to be asystem of weakly coupled dimers in perfect agreement with the experimentaldata. Pb0.55Cd0.45V2O5 provides an example of the modification of thespin system in layered vanadium oxides by cation substitution. Simplecorrelations between the cation size, geometrical parameters and exchangeintegrals for the MV2O5-type oxides are established and discussed.
