Abstract : A qualitative theory of gas breakdown had been developed for the conditions when the average energy of electron oscillations in an alternating field MATH exceeds the ionization potential of atoms I. The dependence of the growth rate of ionization MATH on ε0 ε0=102-104eV is presented. Experimental investigations on the development of microwave breakdown in helium, argon and air have been conducted, in the region of E0-ω0 =1.5.10-8. 10-7V.s-cm ε0=0.1-300eV and pressures p=5.10-4-10-3torr. Satisfactory agreement between calculated and experimental dependences has been observed for ε0≫I.
