Abstract : The structure of thin sheets of ice accreted on a basal and prism substrate is studied. It is observed that, at all temperatures above a transition value, new crystals develop only on the prism substrate. Below the transition temperature Ta ~ Ts ~ -18°C many small new crystals are formed on both substrates. A numerical simulation model is build up, where the nucleation probability in the droplets and the lateral crystal growth speeds are used as parameters and a good correlation is found between the variations with the temperature of these parameters and of the deposit structure.
