User directory services, such as a database servicecataloging people in a company or community, areimportant components today to many online applications.Furthermore, the design of computer applications andinterfaces that are appropriate to currently marginalizedcommunities, such as those in rural and poor areas of thedeveloping world, has become an increasingly importantresearch area. We have developed and tested a novel userdirectory service made specifically for rural communitiesand for users with low written and computer literacy. Oursystem supports a new interface design that allows users toperfirm directory searches for people across a number ofdimensions without requiring written literacy norkeyboarding skills. This user directory service was testedin a rural community of the Dominican Republic. Initialresults suggest that the general user interface andiconography was effective in supporting users with arange of written literacy and computer skills. However, results show that the Boolean query mechanism. asimplemented, is difficult to master.
