Abstract

Since its establishment in 1929, the Newark Airport has played a major role in the development of air transportation and has contributed immensely to the economy of the areas adjacent to it in particular, and of the nation in general. Its sudden closure, brought about by a succession of tragic accidents, raised a controversial issue: that its present location constituted a serious hazard to the safety and security of the people of the neighboring cities and towns and, therefore, it must be closed permanently or moved to another location. The group that sought the Airport’s closure constituted a small minority. Regardless of their number, however, they successfully swayed public opinion to their side. But their victory was short-lived when the Airport was ordered re-opened, not-withstand their objections. The re-opening was ordered by the New York Port Authorities, operators of the Airport.
