Capacitance for electrostatic adsorption formsprimarily within a Debye length of the electrode surface. Capacitive carbonelectrodes were derivatized with ionic groups by means of adsorbing asurfactant in order to test the theory that attached ionic groups would excludeco-ions and increase coulombic efficiency without the need for an added chargebarrier membrane. It has been discovered that capacitive electrodes surfacederivatized with ionic groups become polarized and intrinsically morecoulombically efficient.
