In this paper we present a recovery-conscious framework forimproving the fault resiliency and recovery efficiency of highlyconcurrent embedded storage software systems. Our frameworkconsists of a three-tier architecture and a suite of recoveryconscious techniques. In the top tier, we promote fine-grainedrecovery at the task level by introducing recovery groups tomodel recovery dependencies between tasks. At the middle tierwe develop highly effective mappings of dependent tasks to processorresources through careful tuning of recovery efficiencysensitive parameters. At the bottom tier, we advocate the use ofrecovery-conscious scheduling by careful serialization of dependenttasks, which provides high recovery efficiency withoutsacrificing system performance. We develop a formal modelto guide the understanding and the development of techniquesfor effectively mapping fine-grained tasks to system resources,aiming at reducing the ripple effect of software failures whilesustaining high performance even during system recovery. Ourtechniques have been implemented on a real industry-standardstorage system. Experimental results show that our techniquesare effective, non-intrusive and can significantly boost systemresilience while delivering high performance.
