An undergraduate engineering internetworkinglearning environment that presents both internetworking principlesand laboratory experimentation is described. The learningenvironment uses the source code availability of the Linux operatingsystem as a case study of the implementation issues andramifications of internet networking infrastructures. Laboratoryuse of experimentation with internetworking equipment andsoftware allows interaction with internetworking principles andfundamentals as well as implementation and performance issues. The objectives of this environment include providing a comprehensivemechanism whereby students are exposed to fundamentalsand principles that may readily be applied to experimental-basedinternetwork research and internetwork product development. A follow-on capstone design environment is also briefly described.
