Hypertension is a leading chronic condition in China and has become the main risk factor for many high-risk diseases, such as heart attacks. However, the platform for long-term monitoring of blood pressure is still lacking. This paper presents a low-cost wireless mobile platform to monitor blood pressure and heart rate using short message service SMS. The proposed application detects and measures blood pressure, heart rate and body posture etc. through a sensor integrated portable device, which can be easily worn by users. Portable device will transmit the captured data to central servers located in community healthcare center through SMS messages. These data will be monitored, analyzed and stored using intelligent alert software for a longer time period. Proposed application enables the users, especially chronic patients and elderly, to retain their daily life while still being monitored. All the modules’ design and implementation, validation tests are described in this paper, and the future potential of the platform in the environment of human-centered electronic health records is discussed.
