Abstract: We investigate the role of the delta isobar in the reaction $\pi d\to \pi d$at threshold in chiral effective field theory. We discuss the correspondingpower counting and argue that this calculation completes the evaluation ofdiagrams up to the order m pi-M N^3-2, with m pi M N for the pionnucleon mass. The net effect of all delta contributions at this order to thepion-deuteron scattering length is 2.4 +- 0.4x 10^-3 m pi^{-1}.
