Abstract : This study tested the hypothesis that emotions may be identifiedearlier than attitudes. The gating paradigm was chosen to investigateif such differentiation between emotions and attitudes waspossible. Perception test results included the following variables:the identification point, the isolation point and the confusionmatrices. Acoustic analysis was conducted and linked tothe perception results. Anger and sadness were separated fromthe other studied affective states on the basis of the results analysis.Interestingly, happiness followed the identification patternfound for attitudes. The future directions of work are presented.Index Terms: affective speech, speech perception, gatingparadigm.
