Abstract : This paper presents a reappraisal of kinematicsand tectonic history of the Thompson Nickel Belt, amajor Paleoproterozoic deformation zone along thewestern boundary of the Archean Superior Province inManitoba. The study, based on the analysis of foliationtrajectory maps and associated shear zone arrays,emphasizes that the overall strain pa ttern resultsfrom transpression. Strains are large, ma rked bystrong subvertical stretch and NW-SE subhorizontalshortening, combined with along-strike stretch.From these, we infer distributed crustal shortening,involving steeply plunging flow rather than largehorizontal displacements, although kinematicindicators show that top-to-the-west motions weredominant. Along-strike shear indicators are poorlyexpressed but suggest a component of bulk dextralstrike-slip. Synkinematic thermal indicators andnew geochronological data indicate that transpressioncould have been a long-lasting, circa 100 Ma, eventin the area
