Abstract: The 1-N c expansion of QCD with N c=3 has been successful in explaining awide variety of QCD phenomenology. Here I focus on the contracted spin-flavorsymmetry of baryons in the large-N c limit and deviations from spin-flavorsymmetry due to corrections suppressed by powers of 1-N c. Baryon massesprovide an important example of the 1-N c expansion, and successful predictionsof masses of heavy-quark baryons continue to be tested by experiment. Theground state charmed baryon masses have all been measured, and five of theeight ground state bottom baryon masses have been found. Results of the 1-N cexpansion can aid in the discovery of the remaining bottom baryons. The brandnew measurement of the \Omega b^- mass by the CDF collaboration conflicts withthe original D0 discovery value and is in excellent agreement with theprediction of the 1-N c expansion.
