Abstract : Lefebvre-s call for a right to the city was made in a particular historical moment, known as the early worldwide expansion of industrial capitalism and the urbanization of societies. The questions raised by the concept were, and are still, addressed primarily in the field of urban studies, even though the author stated that they are not tied to a particular spatial materiality. We explore the specific rural morphological and social characteristics of contemporary Western countryside that allow individuals to initiate their self-empowerment and emancipation initiatives. This leads us to consider some specific - countryside - conditions for these kinds of movements. The possibility of using these characteristics as levers for emancipation is currently threatened by the contemporary capitalist rural economy and should be protected by a new kind of right, the right to the emancipation resources that are built in villages.

Keywords : Right to the city community-based development project local development emancipation resources rural citizenship Spatial justice
