Abstract: In high energy nuclear collisions the leading parton of a jet can changeflavor through interactions with the surrounding medium. This can considerablyboost the relative yield of rare high momentum particles, like strange quarksand photons. We revisit these jet conversions and discuss implications for theazimuthal asymmetry $v 2$ of rare probes. We predict that the $v 2$ of kaons atRHIC falls significantly below that of pions and protons at high transversemomentum. Experimental information on the relative $v 2$ of strange hadronscould provide constraints on the mean free path of fast quarks and gluons in aquark gluon plasma.
