This report contains the second, third, and fourth year retention, transfer, and graduation patterns at each Maryland public community college. The report covers all first- and full-time students, with outcomes for African-American first- and full-time students displayed separately, for the entering classes from 1987 to 1996. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) the four-year success rate of new full-time freshmen has fallen from 39% in the 1988 cohort to 32% in the 1996 cohort - the lowest figure since 1980; (2) the four-year success rate of full-time African American community college students has remained constant at 20%; (3) full-time African American students transferring to a four-year institution increased slightly during the past three cohorts from 13.8% to 15.4%; (4) the four-year success rate of full-time African American community college students continues to lag substantially behind those of all other students; (4) community colleges with the highest four-year success rates for the entering class of 1994 were Chesapeake (44%), Frederick (42%), and Carroll (41%), while those with the lowest rates were Baltimore City (17%), Cecil (23%), and CCBC-Dundalk (24%). The greatest four-year success rates among African American students in 1994 occurred at Charles (28%), Chesapeake (26%) and Frederick (13%), while the lowest rates appeared at CCBC-Dundalk (13%), Harford (13%) and Howard (14%). A total of 38 tables show retention, graduation, and transfer rates for all students, and African American students specifically, at 18 Maryland community colleges. (AS)
