The response of Marist Sisters' College, Woolwich, New South Wales (Australia), to the challenges of teaching information literacy is described. Marist Sisters' College is a high school enrolling approximately 750 girls representing diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds in grades 7 through 12. An integrated information-skills program, described elsewhere, has been developed across the curriculum, and networked computer terminals and CD-ROM towers have become the foundation for an information-technology program aimed at information literacy. The concept of the virtual library serves the College's aspirations for the information environment. The virtual library as it is being developed at Marist Sisters' College gives access to more information than is contained in four walls through electronic access to internal resources and external services, including catalogs and local area networks that enable remote access. Part of the virtual library approach is focusing on the skills needed to use technology as a tool. The virtual library is providing a dynamic and diverse information environment that supports the entire school curriculum. A detailed outline of the information process--defining, locating, selecting, organizing, presenting, and assessing--in terms of skills and outcomes is presented in tabular format.
