Abstract: Using density functional calculations we explore the properties ofas-yet-unsynthesized $3d - 5d$ ordered double perovskites $A 2BB-$O$ 6$ withhighly polarizable Bi$^{3+}$ ions on the $A$ site. We find that theBi$ 2$NiReO$ 6$ and Bi$ 2$MnReO$ 6$ compounds are insulating and exhibit arobust net magnetization that persists above room temperature. When thein-plane lattice vectors of the pseudocubic unit cell are constrained to beorthogonal for example, by coherent heteroepitaxy, the ground states areferroelectric with large polarization and a very large uniaxialmagnetocrystalline anisotropy with easy axis along the ferroelectricpolarization direction. Our results suggest a route to multiferroism andelectrically controlled magnetization orientation at room temperature.
