Nearly all of the research on standard setting focuses on different standard setting methods rather than the interaction of group members and the instructions given to group members. This study explored the effect of deliberation style and the requirement to reach consensus on the passing score, on rater satisfaction, and on postdecision acceptance in three different standard setting procedures. Forty-seven licensed psychologists served as raters. Three methods were used: (1) percentage with prior group ratings (Method A); (2) yes-no consensus with prior group ratings (Method B); and (3) yes-no without prior group ratings (Method C). Results for Method C produced a passing score that was viewed as acceptable and fair and easy to understand and implement. Implications of the results are discussed in terms of social influences on group processes. (Contains 23 references.) (Author/SLD)
