In an age of mass immigration, assimilation is critical not only to the success of the immigrantsbut also to the success of their descendants and of the host society. This paper presentsan outline for an economic theory of assimilation based on the assumption that both immigrantsand natives invest in assimilation, that both may in fact move in the direction of theother, and that the notion of distance is subjective and reversible.
