Summary: It has been proposed that small, brightly colored poeciliid fishesbe used as live bait for Florida gamefish. Studies were conducted todetermine whether Xiphophorus variatus are preferentially preyed upon overa native poeciliid (Gambusia affinis) by Micropterus salmoides and investigatepossible effects of variable platyfish on a community of nativeFlorida poeciliids. Xiphophorus variatus were selectively consumed whenHydrilla verticillata was present. In pool studies variable platyfish hadsome detrimental effects on Heterandria formosa and Poecilia latipinnawhile G. affinis was not affected. Xiphophorus variatus were unable tomaintain their population size during the six month study. Their numberswere especially reduced by the presence of H. verticillata. These controlledcondition studies indicate the introduction of X. variatus by useas bait would probably not lead to displacement of native poeciliids. Theauthor emphasizes the dangers of introducing any exotic into dynamicecosystems.
